Breast cancer is a life-altering diagnosis that affects not just physical health but emotional and psychological well-being as well. For many survivors, breast reconstruction can play a crucial role in the recovery process. However, deciding to undergo breast reconstruction is a significant decision that involves various considerations.

At Halvorson Plastic Surgery in Asheville, NC, we understand that this journey is deeply personal and unique for each individual. Dr. Eric Halvorson, a double-board-certified plastic surgeon with an extensive background in both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, is dedicated to providing individualized care that prioritizes quality and compassion.

What Is Breast Reconstruction?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons® reports that the goal of breast reconstruction is to restore one or both breasts to near-normal shape, appearance, symmetry and size following mastectomy, lumpectomy, or congenital deformities.

The American Cancer Society® reports that a woman might choose to have breast reconstruction for many reasons:

  • To make her chest look balanced when she is wearing a bra or swimsuit
  • To help make clothes fit better
  • To permanently regain her breast shape
  • So she won’t have to use a breast form that fits inside the bra (an external prosthesis)
  • To feel better about her body

Breast reconstruction can restore a woman’s sense of femininity and improve her quality of life following the trauma of cancer treatment. Reconstruction can be performed during the same surgery as the mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later time (delayed reconstruction).

Types of Breast Reconstruction

There are two main options for breast reconstruction, and choosing the right one depends on individual preferences, health factors and the specific treatment plan for breast cancer:

1. Implant Reconstruction

This involves using saline or silicone implants to create the shape of the breast. The procedure usually occurs in two stages: placing the tissue expander (a temporary implant used to stretch the skin) and then replacing it with a permanent implant. This method is popular due to its relative simplicity and effectiveness.

2. Autologous Reconstruction (Flap Surgery)

This technique uses tissue from another part of the body — such as the abdomen, back or thighs—to reconstruct the breast. While flap surgery requires longer recovery due to the additional surgical site, it often results in a more natural look and feel. Tissue flaps also work better than implants following radiation. Although Dr. Halvorson has extensive experience in this type of reconstruction, we are no longer offering complex tissue flap reconstruction (e.g., TRAM, DIEP, SIEA, SGAP flaps).

In some cases, a combination of both implants and autologous tissue may be used to achieve the desired outcome. Dr. Halvorson will work closely with patients to determine the best approach based on individual anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Factors to Consider

When contemplating breast reconstruction, there are several important factors to contemplate:

  • Timing: Breast reconstruction can be performed either immediately or delayed. Immediate reconstruction can help patients feel whole faster, while delayed reconstruction may provide time for emotional healing. Discussing these options with Dr. Halvorson will help you make an informed decision.
  • Health and Recovery: Your overall health and any additional treatments (like radiation therapy) can impact the timing and type of reconstruction. It’s vital to discuss your complete medical history with Dr. Halvorson to create a safe and effective plan tailored to your needs.
  • Emotional Readiness: It’s normal to have a mix of emotions when considering reconstruction. Feelings of anxiety, fear or even excitement are common. Dr. Halvorson is committed to making patients feel comfortable and informed throughout the process. Counseling or support groups can also be beneficial as you navigate this journey.
  • Aesthetic Goals: Every woman’s goals and visions of her body are unique. Dr. Halvorson takes the time to understand your individual concerns and aspirations, ensuring that the reconstruction is as aligned with your vision as possible.
